It is obvious that drivers in the UK feel the current fixed penalty for uninsured driving is far too low, with 35 per cent claiming the fine should be increased to at least £1,000 putting it in line with being caught without a TV licence - a considerably less serious offence.

The consumer warning issued by the FSA reads: "Under the provisions of the Road Traffic Act 1988 you are committing a criminal offence if you use a vehicle on the public highway without third party insurance issued by an insurer authorised to carry on insurance business in the UK.
